So I just bought a Canon Rebel XTi a few days ago.
I bought it because I only had about a G to work with.
I got an 18-55mm and a 75-300mm.
I'm not posting this for hate, just tips and stuff.
I'm new to the whole photography scene and I'm not going to go out and spend a ton of money on something I'm not familiar with.

rule of thirds is a good way to start. avoid intersecting lines, (i.e. poles coming out of heads) get up close with fisheye, get creative with angles (climb trees, scale small buildings etc etc) don't blow out the clouds and/or snow. basically just shoot lots and you'll figure it out. good luck man.

All you have to do is get out and start shooting, start off using the manual settings on your camera and get to know your camera as best as you can. Don't be afraid to use the Users Manual to find things out that your stuck with, it will usually have the answer you need. But like I said learn using manual settings, you'll learn the most this way sense your setting your camera for the shot rather than doing it doing it itself.
